Harvey Goldstein

Overview

Harvey Goldstein (1939–2020) was a British statistician (Institute of Education, University of London, and later Bristol), a founder of modern multilevel (hierarchical) modeling. He developed the iterative generalized least squares (IGLS) estimation framework and led the development of the MLwiN software.

Key Contributions / Features

• The IGLS algorithm for multilevel models (Goldstein 1986) and nonlinear/discrete-response multilevel models (Goldstein 1991); the monograph Multilevel Statistical Models.
• With Jon Rasbash, the improved (PQL) quasi-likelihood approximation for multilevel binary responses (Goldstein-Rasbash 1996).
