Luc Anselin

Overview

Luc Anselin is a spatial econometrician and geographer (University of Chicago; previously Arizona State, Illinois), the founding figure of modern spatial econometrics and of exploratory spatial data analysis software (GeoDa, PySAL).

Key Contributions / Features

• LISA / local Moran (Anselin 1995): local indicators of spatial association decomposing global Moran's I into per-location contributions to map clusters and outliers.
• Spatial Econometrics: Methods and Models (1988): the foundational text on spatial-lag and spatial-error regression models and their estimation/testing.
• Robust LM spatial-dependence tests (Anselin-Bera-Florax-Yoon 1996): OLS-residual LM tests ($LM_{err}$, $LM_{lag}$ and their robust versions) that discriminate spatial-lag from spatial-error misspecification.
