Overview
Ma. Rebecca Valenzuela is an economist at Monash University, working on applied welfare economics and household demand analysis. Her 2002 conference paper with William E. Griffiths developed a Gibbs sampler for multi-set SUR models with cross-set coefficient restrictions, applied to Australian household equivalence scale estimation using the Extended Linear Expenditure System (ELES).
Key Contributions / Features
- ELES equivalence scale estimation (Griffiths-Valenzuela 2002): 5,532 Australian households, H=8 demographic types, 11 commodities; commodity-specific scales sih = aih/air; general scales from equating indirect utility functions; first child ~23% budget increase; economies of scale for 2nd child
- Multi-set SUR Gibbs sampler: joint development with Griffiths of the three-block all-conjugate sampler; set-specific Ωh and Θh, common η across all H demographic groups
