- Causal effect of DI receipt on mortality (Black et al. 2024): Co-authored the first causal estimate of disability insurance allowance on 10-year mortality using the ALJ judge leniency instrument (N = 610,231 appellants aged 55–64, 1995–2004). Key finding: LATE = +2.8 pp 10-year mortality for marginal appellants, masking an MTE heterogeneity where inframarginal (sicker) recipients benefit while marginal (healthier) recipients face increased mortality via work disincentives. - COVID-19 YLL decomposition (Parra et al. 2022): Senior author; demonstrated cohort-based COVID LEL = 11 days nationally (vs. 1+ year period-based estimates) using individual-level death certificate data from three Midwest areas. Documented that non-elderly Hispanic men face >4× the COVID PFR of same-age White men; SES explains only a fraction of racial disparities. See Years of Life Lost.
