Overview
Kyle J. Caswell is a researcher at the Urban Institute. His work focuses on disability insurance, health economics, and the economic well-being of DI/SSI participants and denied applicants. He co-authored Bound, Caswell, and Waidmann (2013), which estimated the insurance value of DI/SSI for individuals with mental health impairments using HRS wave 4 linked to SSA administrative records.
Key Contributions / Features
- Insurance value of DI for mental health (Bound, Caswell, and Waidmann 2013): Propensity-score analysis on HRS-SSA linked data (ages 50–64) showing that DI beneficiaries with mental illness are economically indistinguishable from rejected applicants after reweighting — income, wealth, and earnings capacity converge — while health insurance coverage (90.5% vs. 53.1%) is the largest quantifiable benefit of award. The program successfully targets the highest-need applicants within the mental illness population. See DI Denied Population and Causal Effects of DI Receipt.
