- Application-process employment effect on denied SSDI applicants (2018): Estimated the causal effect of the SSDI application decision — independent of receiving benefits — on the subsequent employment of denied applicants. Found a 36 pp employment reduction (IV/2SLS) among ages 50–58 measured 2–3 years post-application. Identified via FRA variation across birth cohorts (1983 Social Security Amendments) and state-level DDS allowance rates. Challenged the Bound (1989) assumption that denied applicants are a clean control group for accepted applicants, showing that denied applicants are themselves treated by the application process.
