Overview

Sir Michael Marmot (born 1945) is a professor of epidemiology at University College London and one of the world's leading authorities on the social determinants of health. His decades of research, beginning with the Whitehall Studies of British civil servants, established the existence of a continuous SES–health gradient that cannot be explained by access to care or behavioral risk factors alone. He chaired the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health (2005–2008) and authored the Marmot Review (2010) on health inequalities in England.
