Murray Aitkin

Overview

Murray Aitkin is a statistician (Centre for Applied Statistics, University of Lancaster, and later elsewhere) known for work on generalized linear models, finite-mixture and latent-variable models, and the simultaneous test procedure for complex cross-classifications. He was an early proponent of fitting survival and other models through GLIM.

Key Contributions / Features

• Co-author of Aitkin-Clayton (1980), the Poisson-GLM ("Poisson trick") approach to parametric censored survival regression.
• The simultaneous test procedure (Aitkin 1978) for reducing complex regression models; (with Bock, 1981) marginal maximum likelihood for item-response models via the EM algorithm.
