My Take

The paper's power is almost entirely in Figure 1 — a single chart that places a dozen expert ceiling assertions against a linear trend that consistently outran each of them. The text is minimal; the visual argument is devastating and immediately interpretable. This explains its extraordinary citation count (>3,000) relative to its length.

The core analytical claim is descriptive, not causal: a trend has been linear for 160 years. Extrapolating it assumes the past predicts the future — defensible over short to medium horizons but unprovable over long ones. The paper does not explain why the trend has been so linear; the mechanism (the bxb_x tilt explanation that Vaupel 1986 and Lee 2003 develop) is absent from the 2002 piece.
