Overview
James W. Vaupel (1945–2022) was a demographer and biodemographer at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research and Duke University. A founding figure of biodemography, he made fundamental contributions to understanding the Gompertz age-pattern of mortality, heterogeneity and frailty in aging populations, deceleration of mortality at advanced ages, and the analysis of long-run trends in best-practice life expectancy.

- Vaupel (1986) life-years formula — "How Change in Age-Specific Mortality Affects Life Expectancy," Population Studies 40(1): 147–157. Showed analytically that the life-years contributed by a given percentage decline in age-specific mortality mx vary with the age at which improvement occurs: improvement at older ages yields more life-years per unit improvement than improvement at younger ages, once survival to that age is already relatively high. This result underpins the bx tilt explanation for the apparent linear growth of period e0 (Lee 2003): as mortality improvement shifted from young-age to old-age dominance over the 20th century, each unit of improvement generated more e0 gain, maintaining the linear trend despite diminishing returns at young ages. - Oeppen-Vaupel record (Oeppen and Vaupel 2002) — "Broken Limits to Life Expectancy," Science 296(5570): 1029–1031. Co-authored with Jim Oeppen. Best-practice female e0 has risen at +0.24 years/year since 1840 with no sign of deceleration. See Jim Oeppen.
- Rau et al. (2006) — 10 Years After Kannisto: Co-authored with Roland Rau, Domantas Jasilionis, and Dmitri A. Jdanov. Using KTDB data for 27 developed countries through 2000, the paper confirmed and extended Kannisto et al.'s (1994) findings: 80+ populations grew in every country (8.9M → 29.7M, +3.02%/yr); centenarians grew 11-fold (+6.09%/yr); annual improvement rates were monotonically accelerating across four successive decade pairs (females 80–89: 0.91% → 2.45%/yr). No biological minimum was detected — Japan, with the lowest old-age death rates, showed the fastest improvement.
